Where are you
from Pauline?
From the Netherlands.
How long have you
lived in Portugal?
I have lived here since I was two (my parents came to live
in Portugal in 1969). At about 13 years old I went back to finish my studies in
The Netherlands, missed Portugal too much and came back in 1987.
Tell us about the
Earth Café (and your role in it).
Earth shop.cafe is an innovative concept – a
café and a shop in the same space. We are four partners – my husband Richard,
me & two friends who already have established and successful businesses (
Rafael Carlson who is managing partner at Club Nau in Ferragudo, and together
with João Marques, has Terroir wine shop & kitchen in Carvoeiro and Wine
Emotions a wine distributing company , specialising in small Portuguese
producers .We were of the opinion that a place like Earth was missing in the
area and set it up also thinking of people like us, living here - catering not
only the tourist. To start it up, I have been the partner on deck , but the
place wouldn't be what it is without each partner`s invaluable, individual
input.
We serve a choice of complete breakfasts, and
light lunches made with quality fresh ingredients. Earth is not a vegetarian
café, but we do have many vegetarian options, our eggs are from free range chickens,
we have home-made gluten free bread and almond milk as different options. We
serve high quality Italian Illy coffee, home-made scones and cakes, fresh fruit
& vegetable smoothies, wine by the glass and craft beer. Every week or two
we change our quiche and another dish and when the days start cooling down, we
have a wood burner going.
The shop specialises in Portuguese small
producers -olive oils, jams, teas, honey, salts, wine soaps, handmade recycled gifts,
beautiful affordable Portuguese chinaware.. You can also order an organic
veg& fruit box of the week which gets delivered at Earth every Thursday.
We opened in June 2015 and have meanwhile
already expanded the seating area and our kitchen. For opening times it`s best
to check our FB https://www.facebook.com/earth.shop.cafe/
or Trip Advisor https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g189115-d8440438-Reviews-Earth_Shop_Cafe-Carvoeiro_Faro_District_Algarve.html pages. Our closing day is Tuesday and this
year will close from half November until half December this year.
Do you still have
time for Yoga and photography?
Mmm, I continue with my daily yoga practice
but reduced the time spent on it a lot. I know it is also a question of
priorities, but we also have two dogs which I love to walk (and they need it
too of course) every morning and evening for about an hour. As far as teaching-
that has been on standby since we started this project. My camera is always
with me and I continue taking pictures as I love it. At the moment I have a
small selection of photos exhibiting at Earth and at Restinga Ria in Alvor.

Thailand or
Portugal?
Portugal at the moment.
Thailand is on standby with the winter
business we had going there ( Diving Centre & a beach bar & Yoga on a
small island in the Andaman sea). At about the same time that the beach
construction got destroyed by waves & wind, also the political situation
worsened. Meanwhile having Earth open all year, we believe it is not a good
idea to leave it for such a long time.
What’s the last
book you read?
Bibi´s Bijzondere Beesten Boek- ( Bibi`s
Special Animal Book) a children`s book in Dutch written by a good friend of
mine.
